According to an old Celtic saying, heaven and earth are only three feet apart, but in thin places that distance is even shorter. For the ancient Celts, they experienced that on the beautiful, wind-swept isle of Iona, now part of Scotland. Some people find their own “thin places” as they stand under the dome of stars twinkling down on them, or listen to the mighty oceans roar. Some journey at great cost to find their thin place – to Jerusalem, to Mecca, even to Stonehenge – and some stumble upon them when least expected. It is peace, though it is not always peaceful. It is where earth reaches up to the heavens, and the heavens reach down to earth. It is when humanity and the divine are closest.
